Full Abstract: Traditional stormwater management relies on source control methods to prevent pollutants from entering runoff. However, in cases where these methods fall short, especially when dealing with fluctuating turbidity and other contaminants, alternative solutions are needed. This presentation focuses on Active Treatment Systems (ATS) – a powerful technology designed to address these challenges.
ATS come into play when existing Best Management Practices (BMPs) are unable to meet stringent environmental regulations. These systems typically employ a combination of technologies, including:
• Monitoring and Automation: Real-time monitoring allows for continuous assessment of water quality parameters and ensures optimal system operation.
• Flocculation Chemistry: By adding specific chemicals, suspended particles in the water clump together (coagulate) into larger flocs, making them easier to remove.
• pH Adjustment: Adjusting the water's pH can optimize the efficiency of the coagulation process.
• Pressurized Sand Filtration: The final stage utilizes a pressurized sand and gravel filter to remove the coagulated particles from the water stream, resulting in a significant reduction in turbidity and Total Suspended Solids (TSS).
