Roam Along the River: Explore Richmond’s Waterfront on Foot

Welcome to Richmond! Stretch your legs and explore the city’s Fall Line, taking in the sights along the James River and Richmond’s Floodwall, which protects both sides of the riverbanks during high flows. As you stroll along Richmond’s Canal Walk, admire the vibrant murals from the latest RVA Street Art Festival—a creative bonus from the city's combined sewer system upgrades. Cross the T. Tyler Potterfield Memorial Bridge, Richmond’s newest 1,600-foot pedestrian bridge over the James River, and enjoy some of the best skyline views the city has to offer.


 

Your journey will cover nearly four miles on a mix of paved and gravel trails, with some sets of stairs (both up and down) along the way. Be prepared for February's unpredictable weather, which can swing from chilly to warm, and get ready for a mostly flat, out-and-back adventure on car-free paths. Along the route, you'll have the chance to learn about Richmond's rich history and infrastructure while also enjoying the views and the company of fellow IECA Annual Conference attendees.

Tour Leader: Jenn Clarke - City of Richmond

Jenn really does love long walks and is a spirited (if not slightly overzealous) board and card game player, an amateur but avid knitter, and a Program and Operations Supervisor with the City of Richmond’s Stormwater Utility and their integrated RVAH2O clean water initiative. With diverse experience at the intersection of human and environmental wellness, Jenn is passionate about building relationships, partnerships, community, and infrastructure in an effort to effect positive hands-on change to improve the health of the James River and how life is enjoyed along it.



Additional Tour Information

Length: The tour is about 4 miles of walking - be sure to have comfortable footwear and be dressed for the weather. This will be a 2 to 2.5 hour excursion
Route: You’ll depart on foot from the Omni Richmond Hotel at 100 South 12th Street and end your journey by either returning there or heading straight to the networking event nearby at Southern Railway Taphouse at 100 South 14th Street.
Capacity: 25 attendees
